WILCOX, Thomas Professor

Thomas Wilcox died on Sunday (December 21, 2008). He was 87. Tom was born in Bronxville, NY, where he lived with his parents, Daniel and Katherine Malone Wilcox and his brother Daniel until they moved to Winnetka, IL, where Tom attended New Trier High School. Tom attended Amherst College, MA and graduated with honors in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy and became a pilot serving in Britain. During flight training, Tom met his future wife, Darlene Butcher of Hutchinson, KS; she was his flight simulator trainer. They were married two weeks later. After World War II, Tom did his graduate studies in English at Harvard University, and during that time daughter Patricia was born. Tom started his long teaching career at Bennington College, Vermont, where son, Daniel was born. Tom started and was the editor of Exercise Exchange, a magazine for college English teachers. When Alaska became a State, Tom was honored by being asked to help improve the new University's English Dept. and the family spent two years in Alaska. Thereafter in 1962, Tom accepted a professorship at the University of Connecticut. While at UConn, Tom supervised its Freshman English program. He was often to be seen driving around in his classic Triumph TR3 sports car. He retired as Professor Emeritus from UConn in 1986. Tom was a gourmet cook, loved jazz and classical music, and also enjoyed fishing and power boating - the family had many pleasant times on Long Island Sound on his Boston Whaler, Felix Culpa (Happy Sin). Tom's sense of humor, his way with words and his kindness endeared him to family, friends and caretakers alike. Tom was predeceased by his wife, Darlene Butcher Wilcox. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Wilcox Nielson of Bristol; his son, Daniel Wilcox of Potomac, MD; his grandson Matthew Wilcox also of Potomac, MD; his brother, Daniel Wilcox of Palm Springs, FL; and his dear friend Corinne Wingard of Agawam, MA. Mary K. "Helen" (Kaicher) Reeves, 82, of Plainville, formerly of Bristol, widow of William "Red" Reeves, Jr., died Wednesday, (December 24, 2008) in Plainville. She was born March 28, 1926, in Bridgeport and was a daughter of the late John and Frances (Dalton) Kaicher. She was employed at the Avon Howard Johnson's for 32 years and then with the Bristol VNA for 9 1/2 years as a home health aide. She was a parishioner of St. Gregory Church. She swam together with her daughter Fran at the Giamatti Center three nights a week and enjoyed crafting with her daughter at the 1st Congregational Church of Waterbury. She leaves a son Michael E. Reeves of Plainville; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Thomas Schinkel of Bristol; four grandchildren, Eric and Troy Schinkel, Chrystal Reeves and Melissa Hutchinson; two great grandchildren, Melissa Adams and Devon Hutchinson; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son William H. Reeves, III; and three brothers, Edward "Bud" Kaicher, Sr., William Kaicher and John Kaicher. Babe was born on January 12, 1926 in Bristol and was a daughter of the late Mauro and Angela (Scaranno) Coletto. Pietro DiMatteo, 90 of Bristol, beloved husband of Margherita (Morelli) DiMatteo, died peacefully, Tuesday, (December 23, 2008) at Bristol Hospital with his family by his side. Pietro was born December 9, 1918 in Alvignano, Italy, son of the late Nicola and Domenica (Pasquarelli) DiMatteo and was a long time resident of Bristol. Pietro retired from Bristol Springs in Plainville, in 1983. He enjoyed making home-made wine and his favorite hobby was his vegetable and flower garden. He loved to share his vegetables with his family and friends. His garden was admired by many and he was thrilled to have received an award from the Garden Club for the best vegetable garden in Bristol. He was a veteran of the Italian Army, serving during World War II. Pietro received much pleasure from his many visits of family and friends. We will miss the many stories he shared of his life. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Linda DiMatteo of Bristol. A daughter and son-in-law, Michelina and her husband Franco Pellino, of Alvignano, Italy. He is also survived by a brother, Paolo DiMattto, also of Italy. Four grandchildren, Pete DiMatteo and his wife Christine and her daughters, Sarah and Hillary and a very special great-grandson, Michael Nicholas DiMatteo, all from Monroe. His granddaughter, Natalie Strahowski and her husband Matthew of Plainville. Granddaughters Rosella and Antonella of Italy. In addition, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends, along with his extended family, the DiVenere family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rosina (Aceto) DiMatteo and beloved daughter Domenica DiMatteo. Dorilla P. (Page) Simoneau, 95, formerly of 104 West St., Bristol, widow of Emile F. Simoneau, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Ingraham Manor.Dorilla was born July 26, 1913, in her grandmother’s house in Bristol and was the eldest child of the late Arthur and Alzina (Goulet) Page. She was a lifelong Bristol resident and attended St. Ann Grammar School and the Smith Business School. She was active in local clubs and was a member and past president of the Franco American War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary, the Daughters of Isabella, the Bristol Women’s Club and the Ladies of St. Ann. She was a member of St. Ann Parish, Bristol. Dorilla’s proudest accomplishment was raising three children who all went to college.She is survived by her three children, Lorraine French of Bristol, Richard Simoneau and his wife Kathleen of Sandy Hook and Suzanne Simoneau and her husband Stephen Eaton of Bristol; and two sisters, Blanche Brault and Lorraine Duquette of Bristol. John B. Ferro, 59, of Miami Gardens, Fla., formerly of Bristol, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008. He was born June 17, 1949, in Bristol, son of the late Frank C. Ferro and the late Arline (Mitchell) Ferro Lavery. John was a lifelong resident of Bristol before moving to Florida eight years ago. Before his move, he was self-employed during the late 1980s and early 1990s as owner and operator of Michigan Hots Restaurant. He also was a professional tractor-trailer driver for many years. John had a passion for spectator sports especially baseball and spent his younger years dreaming of becoming a ball player. John is survived by his beloved son, daughter-in-law and grandson, Scott, Dawn and Zachary John Ferro of Terrryville; former wife, Gale Delfino of Canton; former father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alessio and Yolanda Delfino of Burlington; uncle and aunt Robert and Jackie Hart of Bristol; and several cousins and friends. Gerard LaForge, 82, of Bristol, husband of Gilberte “Jill” LaForge, died on Wednesday (December 24, 2008) at Sheriden Woods Heath Care. Gerard was born in St. Jacques, New Brunswick, Canada on August 8, 1926 and was a son of the late Alex and Josephine (St. Pierre) LaForge. He has resided in Bristol since 1965, and was employed at Amodio Movers in New Britain before retiring. He was a member of St. Ann Church, Bristol. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Gerard is survived by his son and daughter in law, Jean L. and Donna LaForge of Bristol; two grandsons, Jamie and Douglas LaForge; a sister, Lanne Doiron and sister in law, Janinne LaForge, both of Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada; and several nieces and nephews, including Murielle and Denis Lamontagne of Bristol. Judge Robert R. Maynard, 83, of Brightwood Rd, Bristol, CT passed away on Tuesday December 23 at home with his wife by his side. He was born in Bristol June, 6, 1925 the son of Montcalm and Emma Maynard. He is survived by his wife Margaret the love of his life of 56 years, his son Christopher of Tucson, AZ, Timothy and Karen Maynard of Bristol and their children, Alyssa, Christina and Thomas, Lisa Attle of Ashland, OH, and her children, Eric, Christine and Camille, Nicole and Richard Megos of Cromwell and their children, Carson and Aiden. He is also survived by a brother, Richard M. Maynard of Bonita Springs, FL and nephews Kenneth, Steve, Paul, Donald, Michael and William, their spouses and children all form the “Maynard Clan” and will carry out his legacy. He was predeceased by his sister Irene Mason and a son-in-law Simon Attle on October 7, 2008. Robert most known to his family and friends as Bob and "Duke" during the World War II years lived his life to the fullest. He dedicated to his family and his community whom he loved so much. A life long Bristol resident, he was a man of many professional accomplishments. A 1943 graduate of Bristol High School, who was sent to the beaches of Normandy, France on D-day +3 for the invasion and liberation of France. During the invasion he was seriously wounded and sent to England for recovery and was later sent back to Pierrefond, France as an interpreter between the American forces and local French Government. After the war ended he came back to Connecticut, married Margaret, attended and graduated from Wesleyan University in 1952 with a BA. He went on to attend and graduate from the University of Virginia law school with a JD in1955. After law school bob and Peggy returned back from Connecticut where he ran his mother's Insurance Agency, Maynard Insurance. He was admitted into the CT Bar Association and soon started his law practice on Laurel St. in Bristol from 1962 until 1990. During this time he was also elected to the position of Probate Judge and served honorably from 1984 until his retirement in 1994. His many accomplishments both civically and politically in the Bristol community were; City of Bristol, Assistant Corporation Counsel 1956-1960, City of Bristol Chief Corporation Counsel 1963-1965, Democratic Town Committee 1947-1953 and 1955-1975 and Served as Chairman from 1964-1965, Register of Voters 1948-1952, Director and Chairman of Bristol Hospital/Greater Bristol Hospital Health Services, Inc., 1981-1983, Director and Chairman of Tunxis Community-Technical College Advisory Counsel where he received on June 4th, 1985 the Board of Trustees Merit Award, Director, of Bristol Savings Bank, Trustee of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Bristol, Member of St, Ann Parish Council, St. Ann Finance Committee, Member of the Club Franco-American de Bristol, Franco American War Veterans, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, L'Union des Franco-Americans of Connecticut and the United States Redevelopment Counsel for the Redevelopment Agency of the City of Bristol. As a man dedicated to God, his faith and his Church, he was made a Papal Knight of Saint Gregory the Great and was knighted in a formal ceremony at St. Ann Church by Arch Bishop John Whalen in 1972. As a combat veteran of World War II, he was awarded and received medals including the Combat Infantry Badge, The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart, Two Bronze Battle Stars, the Bronze Arrow for his Normandy Beach assault, and many more distinguished awards both personally, professionally and as a war veteran. He was a member of several war veteran organizations including Second Indian Head Division Association and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was appointed Agence Consular an Honorary Diplomatic Consul for the French Government from 1989 to 1995. On April 11, 1997, he was made a Knight of the French National Order of Merit by Decree by the President of France Jacques Chirac at a ceremony held at his home. His greatness as a man came through in his love, kindness, generosity, gentleness and tenderness that he shared with his family, and all of the people's lives whom he touched. Stanley W. Zack Sr., 94, of Plainville, widower of the late Jean (Bracha) Zack, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at Bristol Hospital. He was born March 14, 1914, in New Britain, a son of the late John and Mary (Andrzejczyk) Zach and had lived in Plainville since 1946. He retired as a foreman from the Brown Mfg. Co. in Plainville. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Church, Plainville and active in the church choir. Stan was involved with the Plainville Democratic Party for several years. He was a member of the Plainville Senior Center and loved boating and fishing and was an avid gardener. He leaves two sons and daughters-in-law Stanley and Linda Zack Jr., of Stafford, Va. and Richard and Evelyn Zack of Bristol; a daughter, Geraldine Roberge of Burlington; a sister, Helen Schuckman of West Hartford; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Darryl Kilbourn, age 60, of Bristol Street, Southington, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at home. He was the husband of the late Theresa (Milo) Kilbourn. Born June 17, 1948, in Southington to Frances (Johnson) Kilbourn and the late Hunter Kilbourn he had been a longtime Southington resident. Mr. Kilbourn worked for New Britain Candy and served his country in the U.S. Army. Nanette Rose Wishart, 78, widow of Thomas John Wishart, Sr. of Bristol, passed away on Thursday, (December 18, 2008) from respiratory complications. She passed peacefully and gracefully from this life to the next surrounded by her loving family. Nanette was born on January 31, 1930 in Bristol a daughter of the late Peter and Lillian (Ehrlich) Barilla. Nan devoted her life to the happiness and success of her many children. She taught tolerance and acceptance, she expected honesty and hard work. She was an excellent cook and a great Scrabble player. Nan was an accomplished artist in many mediums and she passed her natural talents to children and grandchildren. She always placed others needs above her own; she was the ultimate mom to many-including those who had their own mother. Her strength, wit, and love will be missed by all. She is survived by her children, Donna Park of Bristol, Cappy Comparone of Bristol, Mark Comparone of Beaverton, OR, Ellen Hiebert of Keene, NH, Susan Wishart of Bristol, Michael Wishart of Simsbury and Thomas Wishart of Bristol; her brother George Barilla of Dover, DE. Jean C. Reidy, 79, of Watertown passed away on Saturday, (December 20, 2008) at Cedar Lane Rehab and Health Center, Waterbury. Jean was born on July 30, 1929 in Oneonta, NY, a daughter of the late Clayton and Gertrude (Busfield) Coats. She graduated from Syracuse Central High School and was a Delta Gamma at Syracuse University. Mrs. Reidy was a former Bristol resident who was active within the Bristol Girls Club, the Bargin Box and the Reading Club. Jean always enjoyed her times with her children, and in her younger years was an avid reader, tennis player and golfer. Although her days of actively participating had passed several years ago, she still enjoyed watching tennis on TV and of course she always loved helping out in the kitchen and adding her words of wisdom. After a long hard struggle she is now at peace. Jean is survived by her sons, David M. Reidy of Bristol, Patrick J. Reidy and his wife Cynthia of Otisco, NY, Thomas E. Reidy and his wife Kathleen and their daughter Haylee of Middlefield, and Robert Reidy of Wilmington, MA; her daughter Sheila J. Reidy and her partner Janet Taylor of Watertown; and several nieces and nephews. Freddie Siering, 68, of Bristol passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008. He was the widower of Thelma (Morgan) Siering. Freddie was born in New Britain son of the late Louis and Mabel (Button) Siering. He attended local schools and graduated from New Britain Senior High School. He was retired from The O. C. Getty Company. Nancy A. (Daley) Couture, 68, of Perkins Avenue, Waterbury, died Thursday evening Dec. 18, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Edward J. Couture. Nancy and Ed recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Nancy was born in Waterbury Feb. 8, 1940, daughter of the late Daniel and Dorothy (Honegger) Daley. She worked for Carby Manufacturing in Watertown for 13 years and then Bozzuto’s of Cheshire for four years retiring in 2004. Nancy’s hobbies included sewing, quilting and going to the casino. She enjoyed watching her children play sports over the years. She coached cheerleading for the Waterville Vikings Midget Football for 10 years. Besides her husband of 50 years she leaves, three sons, Edward J. Couture Jr., John Couture and his wife, Marlo, and Dr. Alan J. Couture, all of Waterbury; a daughter, Susan Morocco and her husband, Edward, of Bristol; a brother, John R. “Jack” Daley and his wife, Linda, of Manchester Center, Vt.; a sister, Kathy Chaivanik and her husband, George, of Waterbury; a granddaughter, Amy Morocco of Bristol; and 34 nieces and nephews. Leo Turcotte, 85, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at his home. He was born in St. Guillaume, Province of Quebec, Canada, July 6, 1923, and lived in Bristol, until he retired from the Connecticut State Police Department as sergeant in October 1971, where he headed the Division of Humanistic Studies. He attended Hillyer College from which he earned a degree in business administration. Mr. Turcotte enrolled in the U.S. Navy reserves at the age of 19, illegally, as he was still a citizen of Canada. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters for 39 months. He was a crew member of the destroyer Henry A. Wiley, which was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for exceptional success in destroying kamikaze suicide bombers in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa invasions. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 and received his citizenship papers at that time. Upon retirement he and his family moved to Cape Cod, Mass., where Leo was associated with Nickerson Lumber Co. He leaves his wife, M. Frances of 56 years; four children, Christopher Turcotte, Martha Lee Handel, Francine Penney and David Turcotte, all of Cape Cod; and a sister, Noella Kendall; and brother, Richard Turcotte of Bristol; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Emmanuel “Mike” Manolitsis, 75, of Bristol, husband of Toula (Demou) Manolitsis, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Tunis, Tunisia and was a son of the late Zaffiris and Alexandra (Kavouras) Manolitsis. He grew up in Rhodes, Greece. He was the original co-owner of Bristol Pizza for 36 years. He was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Bristol, the Pan-Rhodian Society and the Hellenic Club. He was a gentle man and enjoyed spending time with his family and helping his son at Amano’s Pizza. He was an avid sports fan and especially favored UConn basketball. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. “Mike” loved playing cards at the Greek Club in Hartford with all of his friends on Tuesday nights. Besides his wife Toula, he leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Evangelos “Van” and Melissa Manolitsis of Bristol; two daughters, Sandy Dimitratos and her friend, Bruce Maneeley, of Broad Brook and Lynn Valaris of Southbury; a sister, Kaliopi Ventoutsos of Wethersfield; seven grandchildren Cathi, Emmanuel, Nicholas, Alexander, Alexia, Theresa and Christopher; one great-granddaughter, Alexandra; and several nieces and nephews. He was the son of William and Mary (O’Connell) Reilly. Bill was a graduate of Iona College and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Before moving to Connecticut, Bill lived in Texas, working in the clock industry for Seth Thomas, Ridgeway and Howard Miller clock companies. More recently, he worked for Whitehall, Harstans and Hannoush Jewelers. Besides his wife, Bill is survived by his sons, Bill O’Reilly and wife, Diane of Arizona, Brian O’Reilly and wife Karla of Texas, Kevin O’Reilly of Texas, Liam O’Reilly, USMC stationed in Iraq and Matthew O’Reilly of Kansas; his daughter, Ann of Texas; his sister, Rose and husband, Frank O’Shea of New Jersey; his brother, Gene and wife, Liz Reilly of New Jersey. He also leaves his grandchildren, Sean, Kelly, Shannon and Ryan and many nieces and nephews, also his mother-in-law, Jennie Schultz of Terryville and family. Carucci, Thomas Mr. Thomas Carucci, 61, of Skyview Ter. Bristol passed away peacefully on Tuesday, (December 16, 2008) at St. Francis Hospital. He was the husband of Cheryl (Petosa) Carucci. Mr. Carucci was born in Bristol on December 22, 1947 the son of the late Thomas and Marion (Denehy) Carucci. Tom was a resident of Bristol his entire life and a veteran of the Vietnam War serving four years in the United States Air Force. Tom worked for The Xerox Company in Hartford for more than 30 years, and Tom was the President of the Bristol Military Museum. An avid golfer, Tom was a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants and a proud witness to 2 World Series Championships and 3 Super Bowl Championships. He was a member of St. Anthony Church. Beside his wife of 35 years, he is survived by two daughters, Jillian Carucci and Johanna Carucci, a brother John Carucci, sister- in-law Nancy Petosa, a brother-in-law Ronald and his wife Patricia Petosa, all from Bristol. Tom was the proud grandfather of a cherished grandson, Noah Thomas, and a proud uncle to several nieces and nephews, Lori, Kim, Tom, Dara, Eric and Adam. he is also survived by several aunts and uncles and several great nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.
