CUMMINGS, Thomas John Sr.

Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, coach and truly a great friend to so many. Thomas John Cummings Sr., 78, passed away Nov. 7, 2008, after a long illness.

He was born in New Haven on Jan. 8, 1930, to Charles and Lorraine Cummings. Poppy devoted his time and energy to friends and family in Deep River. He loved his on-the-field presence in an unaccountable number of baseball games. To this day, all of Tom Jr.’s friends reminisce memories of endless nights of sports on the field in Deep River. His brother will also never forget all the golf tournaments, card games and good times. Tom will be fondly remembered for the time and energy he invested in the children of his community and time spent volunteering in the Babe Ruth Little League.

Poppy was predeceased by his loving wife, Barabara Noyack “Bobie” Cummings; his brothers, Raymond, Charles, George, Joseph, William; and sister, Margaret. He is survived by his brothers, Jack and Robert; sister, Lorrainne; and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his son, Thomas J. Cummings Jr. and wife Lisa Ida Cummings of Guilford; and daughter Jennifer Cummings Nastri and husband Neil F. Nastri of Deep River. He is also survived by grandchildren Sarah Nastri BournĂ© and husband John L. BournĂ©, Matthew Nastri and James Nastri and his beloved Ian Gulliver Cummings. Also among his loved ones are beloved great-grandsons Malachi and Josiah BournĂ© and Deven Nastri. Tom also leaves a very special friend, Maria DerBlom and her family, especially her grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew. Tom and Maria spent many happy times hiking together and touring Germany.

Tom earned his business degree at New Haven College. He worked as a purchasing agent at A.C. Gilbert and then at Cramer Controls. He lived in New Haven, East Haven and in Deep River, where he raised his family. Tom retired to Madison a few years ago.

Family and friends may visit the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. followed by burial in Fountain Hill Cemetery in Deep River.
